How to Change Oil on the 3.5L Oldsmobile Intrigue

Changing Oil on Oldsmobile IntrigueDid an oil change on my moms car and documented it for any other weekend mechanics. Overall a pretty simple job, besides the Oil Filter housing – that was a PITA.

Before you start, just know that you will need some type of filter wrench. It is a filament filter and is placed internally into the engine's oil pan. I got a cheap socket from Princess Auto that did the trick.

This 2001 Intrigue takes 6.1L of Castrol GTX 5W30 oil (as per manual in the glove box). Check yours before you do it (easier to check then to drain new oil – a buzzkill really).

I used the Fram CH8765 filter, as more people on the forums prefer these over the AC Delco (OEM GM brand). It ended up being 5 bucks cheaper too.

Start the car for a minute, let it cycle through a few times to warm up the oil. Pull the dipstick and open the oil cap. (After this I'm gonna clean the engine LOL)

Lift the car up. I used a piece of wood between my jack and the engine frame.

Loosen the drain and let the oil drain out. (Take a 15min beer break while you wait for it)

This is what the socket looks like that I bought. It is the adjustable kind for 2.6" – 3.6" filters. Attach to your drive, and go hard.

This is what the filter looks like when it is out of the car, pull out the paper filament and drain any leftover oil in the filter cup. My new Fram filter came with a seal that I never ended up using (it must have been for a different model), the two green seals on the oil cup do not get replaced (verified by a GM tech). Also don't forget to put your drain plug back in.

Start by adding 5L into the engine. Add a bit (not more then 1.1L) and start the engine. Let it run for a minute, shut it off and check the oil level. Add if necessary.

After this you can reset your Oil Life light. Get in the car, put the key into ON position and pump the gas pedal 3 times in under 5 seconds. Done, have more beer.
